Newbie here. Looking for advice and support

Post by Magsyuk »

Hi
My wife was involved in an RTA back in December and as a result of being taken to A&E she was found to have poor kidney function. After various blood tests there has been no improvement but also no further decline. Kidneys are currently functioning at 13%. She is having a biopsy very soon but the specialists are at a loss to explain what the problem is or how to cure her. She has had no symptoms leading up to the accident and doesn’t understand how or why this has happened. She has also had a urine test which has shown that her bladder is completely normal with no infection, another puzzler. Also an early CT scan showed the size of the kidneys to be normal. I don’t expect to get any answers on the forum but would just like to hear people’s thoughts. Are steroids used to treat kidney problems and is it possible for her to recover from this?

Thankyou for reading

Hi Magsyuk,
Welcome to the forum, sorry to read about your wife's condition.

Recovery - will depend on the cause, until that is identified it will be difficult for anyone to give an opinion.
Has she any family history of kidney problems?

With a kidney function of 13% she could well have had the problem before the RTA, the level at which people notice there is a problem varies from person to person.
She may have been feeling a bit tired, and perhaps a few pains in her legs and arms, she may also be retaining some water, this would show as swollen feet/angles/lower leg.

The RTA could be the cause, and in that case the kidneys are likely to recover over time.

Poor kidney function doe's not usually affect the bladder, other than there may be less urine to pass.

One possible treatment may be to drink more but leave this for the doctors to decide.

Best wishes to you both.

Hi Wagolynn many thanks for your reply. No history of kidney problems in the family at all. I think the hospital were hoping it may have been caused by the accident but I think they kind of thought that if it was there would be signs of recovery by now which there isn’t, the results seem to be pretty much static. She has been feeling tired but she has a pretty intense job so it’s difficult to say if that isn’t helping. No water retention or swallon joints etc. It’s all very odd. A blood test five years ago, although not looking for kidney problems was normal so it certainly appears to have been between them and now. We are just keeping everything crossed that the results are favourable and that maybe it can be treated with steroids or something but at this stage we really don’t know anything.

It looks as though the diagnostic process is not yet completed, so it's a matter of patiently waiting, which is easier said than done.
