Re: Creatinine Post Transplant
Thanks for the above - my brother was reassured by the view that this is fairly normal in the early days, and the hospital staff agreed when he asked about this that they would be more worried if it was 6 or 12 months later. His creatinine is back down to 153 and it is reckoned that possibly he was ...

Re: Finding potentail donors
Table 5.16 at the bottom of this link http://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/statistics/transplant_activity_report/current_activity_reports/ukt/kidney_activity.pdf shows the demographic data of living donors (and their recipients) in 2012 in the UK. Two percent of living donors were over 70, and 16% were a...

Re: Finding potentail donors
Since then my father has also come forward, but he is considered too old at 75. I don't believe that there is any specific age limit in the UK for donation - it is entirely based upon how fit the donor is, as they do not want to adversely affect the donor's life post transplant. I am told that they...

Re: Finding potential donors
I don't know how my receipient brother actually felt at the time about asking, but what he did was to get his wife to send out an e-mail stating the situation that he had reached. This was only sent to the close family of the same generation (we are a large family!) and it generated 5 responses. Bei...

Creatinine Post Transplant
My brother's creatinine dropped to 140 by a few days after the transplant. He has just told me that last Friday (16 days post tx) it was at 154, then 174 on Monday, 178 on Tuesday and down to 163 this morning. The worrying thing is that, despite a biopsy yesterday, they are unable to explain this ri...

Re: Top Tips for those going in to have a tx
I just donated on Oct 16th to my brother, in St George's. The best advice on this thread is EARPLUGS; my brother didn't know this (and I had assumed that he would have done some research) so I gave him some when he was disturbed by the patient in the next bed who was watching the same James Bond fil...

Re: Pre-Op Donor Advice
Thanks for that advice Mandy - my brother and his wife think it's very helpful and will do so.
NB I know the kidney was working very quickly as I saw his catheter bag when we were both in Recovery - it was huge!

Re: Pre-Op Donor Advice
That's interesting, SlowLearner, thanks. My brother was down to 124 at the last count and was released on Monday after last Wednesday's operation. The surgeon has explained why mine is unsurprising to be higher than his right now, and reckons that mine will come down but that his is actually likely ...

Re: Pre-Op Donor Advice
Well, all done on Wednesday and I was discharged on Friday. Both my brother and I are doing very well and everyone is very pleased with the progress we have made. My brother's creatinine was below 200 when measured only just after the op! I think my old kidney was producing urine as soon as it was c...

Re: Pre-Op Donor Advice
Thanks BB - in fact I remember reading your rather graphic story some time ago. Surprisingly when I asked onThursday I was given no warnings at all! Thanks for the advice Smudge. My brother's transplant centre isn't St George's, but our transplant nurse is also very helpful and has warned me to not ...

Pre-Op Donor Advice
There's only a week to go now. I've been checking all sorts of sources for advice, including the Tips sticky topic above, inasmuch as it's relevant to a donor, but has any one got any last minute advice for me? Anything it would be helpful to know/take/do/avoid? Has anyone been operated on at St Geo...

Re: Worried about my child
... in the meantime my son has to go to the "nuclear medicine" department on Wednesday and have a "gammagrafia renal" (I couldn't find a translation, but basically he said that they will put a contrasting radioactive liquid in and take pictures and measure the kidneys' function....

Re: pernicious anaemia
Without knowing anything about pernicious anemia, from my experience as a PLD, it sounds most unlikely that she would be acceptable so I think you presume correctly. The tests they have done on me are extensive. However, ask your transplant nurse - if they know and are starting the testing process, ...

Re: Appointment on 12th Aug (brought forward) bad news :(
Just bear in mind that the whole process can be very slow. From talking to people on here, on average it's about 10/11 months from first phone call to operation. Agreed - I did not mean to give the impression that my 18 months is typical - we have been deferre because my brother was not ill enough!...

Re: Appointment on 12th Aug (brought forward) bad news :(
7 people have said they'd be tested but how do they go about doing such things? I presume i'd still go on the list but wouldn't the wait be much less with having 7 potential donors already willing to be tested? As a potential donor (volunteered in Feb 2012, the op is Oct 16th - less than 8 weeks ti...
